Having studied and applied ITIL over many years,ÃI have never spotted one outstanding benefit, but apparently it can assist you if you decide to run for a Council seat !
Chad Cooper in Brighton City, Michigan (MI) is doing exactly that. Chad holds anÃITIL Masters Certificate and if elected is hoping to incorporate information technology as an asset to the City, rather than as an overhead expense.
So the next time you are writing a Business Case for the adoption or introduction of ITIL into your organization, do not forget to include this seldom mentioned benefit.
In reply, Chad has added;
I'm happy to tell you that in these difficult economic times, IT can be a value added resource to many government institutions.
Understanding IT from an asset perspective, rather than an expenditure is key. ITIL can help my city better utilize information technology to reduce cost, provide same or better services to tax payers, contractors, businesses, and industry needs and allow reduced staff to focus on key issues instead of administrative overhead workload.
Automation and communication through enhanced ITIL practices bring together a community with the resources their municipality can offer in more efficient and effective means. The end result is better solutions at reduced cost and reduced man hours.
As governments are looking to cost reductions and new revenue opportunities, imagine what the results of ITIL can provide.
If a community is able to deliver better services as same or reduced cost than other municipalities, it becomes a competitive advantage. Our community is having discussion that others haven't considered because of the best practices ITIL offers. While others are forced to reduce services and cut back, ITIL can help lower cost so that other services can gain the attention they deserve. Metrics are obtained and used to help research and implement better solutions.
Altogether, ITIL can help a municipality function similar to a business. At the end of the day, this is where people, businesses, and industries will chose to make their home.
